5Excellent Mid-price Bass  Apr 15, 2008 By K. Beach "KRB"
The Schecter Stiletto Custom-4 is a very playable Korean-made bass with a very fast neck, decent components, reasonably good wood, and adequate workmanship. Frankly, I bought it because of its neck...it "just felt better" than the Fender Jazz Bass I was comparing it to. This, of course, supports the point that one should demo an instrument before purchasing it because the subtle nuances of tone and feel cannot be gleaned from a Web site. Nevertheless, I'll give it a try.

The Custom-4's body is primarily mahogany. Ecological concerns about rain forest depletion notwithstanding, this is excellent tone wood. The body material works well with the EMG-HZ pickups...providing a sound that is both full and articulate. I use very thin Roto-Sound Funkmaster strings and this wood/pickup combination allows the delicate overtones to shine through the fundamentals the way they're supposed to. The laminated neck is primarily maple with a few layers of walnut. Although this neck is thin, sleek and easily fingered, it is also very stable. The proof of this is that I didn't have to tweak the truss rod much when upgrading from standard gauge strings to the premium ultralights.

I only have one gripe...instead of using a more expensive set of countersunk bolts and nuts to secure the battery compartment cover, Schecter specified plain old wood screws (albeit gold plated). Wood screws do the job, but I'm fairly certain they'll require some guitar tech attention somewhere down the line. Not a show stopper.

Bottom line: the Custom-4 is a very nice, mid-priced bass that looks as good as it sounds. Five stars.

5Schecter Stiletto Custom 4 Bass  Mar 26, 2010 By Jacob Garcia
I'm a pretty new bassist (drums and keys, primarily), and had been borrowing a bass from a friend who no longer plays. It's taken me a while to decide what make/model instrument to buy for myself. I held this baby in the store and knew I'd found it! The balance, thin neck, weight, and easy playability work perfectly for my smaller build and playing style. I think it sounds amazing - much better than my borrowed instrument! This is also my first experience with active EQ, which sounds great.

As of now, I'm running this through a Roland KC-550 keyboard combo amp (180W, 15" w/ horn). It actually sounds fuller and warmer than most low end bass amps I've tried out! I just don't have any drive options. So now I have a great instrument that will be with me for many years to come. Time to start saving for a nice amp stack!! I'm aiming for an Ampeg SVT-3PRO head and SVT-410HLF 4x10 cab.
