4Decent amp  Jun 15, 2011 By Matti_Ice "xxMatti*Icexx"
While I don't personally own this amp, I play in a band with a bass player that owns it. He scored a sweet deal for this and an 8x8 Mesa cab for less than $1500. First, I believe that about 80% of your tone comes out of your bass itself. Garbage in garbage out as they say. A cheap bass will always sound cheap. However, you do want an amp that has certain features. The power, the sound, the controls, and the outputs that will make it useful to you.

SWR makes a good solid product. Thankfully, this is a rackmountable unit so no worrying about carrying it around, finding rack ears for it, or anything like that. Mount it up in a good rack with your power conditioner, sonic maximizer, whatever else you may have and take off with it. It does have two large handles in front that make it easy to carry out of a rack, and thats good because this sucker is slightly heavy.

The WorkingPro has a good number of controls, more than I actually would want myself. I do like the fact that there is a mid level and mid frequency control, as mids are a major part of a good bass tone. There is also a limiter, a preamp and power amp clip light to keep you in range. There is a bass intensifier feature that can enable you to blow down walls. A mute switch, a -10dB input pad, and aural enhancer make this head more versatile than most.

On the back is a balanced output, effects loop, footswtich, unbalanced line out, tuner out, and two parallel speaker outputs for Speakon on 1/4 cables. 4ohm min, 400 watts. Thats perfect for a bass head. Will match 99% of cabs AND more than enough power.

I have messed with this amp, and gotten a good rich, punchy rock tone. Perfect rock/metal tones come out of this thing. However, you can dial in some deader, old school sounds. The head is very reliable, no problems so far. Sounds great every gig we play. If you're in the market for something along these lines I suggest at least giving this a look.

BUT you must consider, for this price range, there are many choices in heads. Ampeg, Markbass, Gallien-Krueger, Aguilar and Genz Benz are all in the running. For a little more, its possible to get a head with a tube preamp. The Gallien-Krueger Ultralight bass head is a few more bucks but its 800 watts! As much as I hate GK, that is a good head. However, most of those amps are going to be hitting the $700 price mark. In my honest opinion if you aren't going to go with either Aguilar or Ampeg, save the 50 bucks and stick with SWR.
