Cool bass, but Jan 22, 2011
By steven j alcott Cool bass, but the stock strings were crap. It would be worth adding the price of the LaBella flats made expressly for this bass so it would play and sound like it's supposed to.

Amazing bass Jun 28, 2010
By Jack Out of my 4 other basses, this is my favorite performance bass. It looks good on stage and sound unbelievable through an amp.
When I want to practice it's good to use if I don't have an amp since it's a hollow body. The minor down side is that it feels cheap and fragile, but it doesn't really bother me.
All in all, I love this bass!

Cool Bass (Even if you don't love the Beatles) Aug 25, 2011

I was looking for a very light bass recently, and I ran across the Hofner Icon bass at Guitar Center. It surely is light, but what I hadn't considered about violin bases is that they're resonant. I really like how this bass sounds - actually I prefer the tone slightly to the more expensive models with the actual Hofner pickups, especially for metal and hard rock.
On the downside, like a lot of inexpensive instruments, I've run into some issues when I've seen this bass in various stores. The first one I tried had some buzz on the low E string, and the tech at the GC I was at told me that this kind of bass is very hard to set up, and not a great candidate for drop tunings. I've also run across several with loose hardware - nothing you couldn't tighten up yourself, but still worth mentioning. And I've seen minor finish issues on a couple. I also saw one with the headstock cracking off the neck, but that could have been the way people treated it in the store.
Something worth knowing is that I've been told this bass won't fit all the strings its more expensive brothers will - I believe the holes in the tuners are a little thinner - but I've been told it will fit LaBella Beatle Bass strings.
All that being said, I think this is a great bass for the money, and it has a tone different than most basses - dialed in right, there's plenty of bottom end, and it's pretty versatile. I preferred it to the Epiphone violin bass, although you may feel differently. If you either buy in person and give the bass a once over, or buy from someplace with a good exchange policy in case you get one with an issue, you won't have to worry if you run into an issue. Definitely a fun bass with plenty of bottom end, and once you master the controls, more variety of tone than I expected.

Like others who have reviewed this Honfer bass, I too am a big Beatle / McCartney fan. And as a bass player, I have alway wanted to put my hands on a Hofner. I own three other bass guitars, Fender Jazz and Precision basses as well as a Music Man Sterling bass. All great guitars. I was initially hestistant to buy this bass because I figured that with such a low price coupled with it being made in China, it may not have been comparable to the guitars I already have. Nothing could be further from the truth! Tried one out at the GC and loved it. They however would not meet Amazon's price (their bad!)In any case, I bought this bass and it is a dream to play. The neck is so much thinner than each of my other basses and the action on it was set just right. With it being a short scale bass, it is much quicker to run up and down the neck. The only problem I had at first is this bass it very low ended (boomy). I play thru an Ampeg amp and it was just a matter of tweeking the settings a bit but once you find that setting, SWEET!
As far as comment about feeling "cheap",this bass has a great look to it. I found no cosmetic imperfections. The sunburst finish on this thing is glossy and great to look at. For you "slap" and "poppers", take your Fender or MM with you for that (only draw back for me - but not a deal breaker!). Oh one last thing, I was not expecting a hardshell case with this deal... for $318 (no tax and free shipping), it is truly a great buy!

Buyer Beware Aug 11, 2011
By Tony C. I bought this from Amazon and thank goodness for their return policy. I was very pleased when it arrived at it's appearance. Then everything went down hill from there. The fret buzz was so bad that I needed to raise the bridge. Bad move. The bridge split down the middle. I've seen harder balsa wood. The round wound strings are also a joke. Bottom line is any serious musician needs to stay away from this P.O.S. I know the old saying about "You get what you pay for" but in this case it's "You get LESS than you pay for". Recommendation; save your pennies and buy a real axe.
