| | Description | A year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of Walter Hofner's original violin bass, made famous by a certain Beatle who shall remain nameless, they have decided to produce a contemporary version. It has a vintage look that will produce many "oohs", and an internal sustain block that creates a more modern, deep-resonating sound that will produce many "aahs." It's the kind of bass guitar people love to see, play, and hear.Aesthetically, this model features a maple-beech-maple set neck with rosewood fretboard accentuated by mother-of-pearl dot inlays, the signature Hofner violin bass headstock, a brass trapeze tailpiece, and glossy spruce top with glossy flamed maple back and sides. An ebony bridge with movable metal saddles maintains intonation and string spacing. The nickel-plated hardware and floating celluloid pearl pickguard give it an extra little pop for the eyes.On the electronics side, you're working with two original Hofner 511B 'Staple' humbucking pickups, as well as a control panel with 2 volume controls, 2 on/off switches, and a rhythm/solo switch for volume boost. The overall sound is warm like the original model, but with a little more sonic kick for a more "now" sound. | |

Hofner CT Beatle Bass a breed apart Feb 19, 2012

Let me start by saying this is a mirror image of the '64 German made bass.... extremely hard to tell them apart in a side by side compariosn. It does not sound like the original due to a sustain block built in under the pick ups. This is why it is called the CT, a Chinese made more modern/contemporary solid body sound at a much reduced price using the same German components that are standard on their German cousins. Out of the box like the ICONS version you need to replace the inferior roundwound strings. I strongly recommend La Bella hofner short scale strings.
The real difference aside from the sound is the weight. The German made and ICONs weigh in at 5.5 lbs. The CT is much heavier.
German made Hofners are very expensive and yes they have that unigue hollow body sound so closely associated with the Beatles. If you are looking for a low cost replica of the most popular bass ever, this is as close as you get without the German pricing. Just be prepared for the sustain block/solid body sound that is not going to give you the signature hollow body sound, for that if you cannot afford the German version you need to look harder at the less expensive and slightly smaller ICONS variant.
I own a '63 original, '62 re-issue, 2011 CT and the ICONS of my original review. They all have Hofner tea pots and flat wound strings and each has its' own personality and I would not trade any of them.
The CT is beautiful and faithful to the original german made basses of the early 60's. The flip side is that if you are looking for that unique hollow body sound made famous by Sir Paul this should not be your first choice. The CT is a great addition to my Hofner collection. However, looks aside this is a different animal and I encourage you to do more research on this variant before purchasing.
