3Decent strings if they fit  Mar 07, 2009 By VC
D'Addario Chromes are OK flatwound strings, though they're a high-tension string, about the same as their XL's (roundwounds) in the department. Unfortunately, the short-scale set did not fit my Guild Starfire bass (much too short!). It wasn't just a case of buying the wrong set like an idiot, either. The long-scales fit better but not perfectly, and these short-scale Chromes don't even fit a Fender Mustang bass OR a violin bass-- I tried them with both those instruments in an effort to get some use out of these strings.
In light of the fit problems, I would skip these strings. Who knows what 'short scale' bass they're supposed to fit.

5Magnificent, But Watch the Scale Length  Apr 29, 2011 By Giles Paxton
This is an excellent product for a very reasonable price. Take note that these are SHORT SCALE strings (30 in. scale), not the usual LONG SCALE (34 in. scale). If your strings go through-body and you have a 30" scale length you may opt for D'Addario's MEDIUM SCALE (32 in.) strings because of the extra length involved. I have always been very impressed with D'Addario strings, especially their flatwounds. They are mellow, yet vibrant and have a very long life and these are no exception. I use these on my Grestch with a TV Jones pickup and they are a wonder to play. I highly recommend these strings if they work for your bass and you like flatwounds.

5Can't Go Wrong With The Flat Chromes  Apr 21, 2010 By Tony Medero
I actually didn't mean to buy the short strings. So, pay attention to that. I use the long scale on my Fender Jazz Bass so I gave these to a friend. But, regardless, short or long they are all quality strings!

5Terrific Bass Strings For Updated Vintage Tone  Sep 20, 2008 By Kenneth J. Hanson "Ken Hanson"
I just put these strings on my Hofner Club bass. They replaced a set of Pyramids that were very expensive.

However, the Pyramids seem to have a chronic problem. The E string was dead. I actually tried a second new Pyramid E string and got slight better but still disappointing performance. I'm done with Pyramids. I've used Hofner, Thomastik Infeld, and Pyramids. I like D'Addario the best.

I did have to use a razor blade to cut some of the silk back so that they would set properly in the nut.

These strings gave my Hofner a brighter and lively sound. Still plenty warm. I'm a fan.

1D'addario ECB81S Chromes XL Short Scale Strings  Feb 21, 2010 By Gary Hunter "tarheel2"
I picked up a set of these strings from JustStrings for $28.91 so I could restring my wife's Fender Mustang. I sure felt like an idiot when they came up WAY too short. The Mustang is a 30" SHORT SCALE bass guitar. Am I missing something here? The only thing I can come up with is this: the string routing on a Mustang is through-the-body so D'addario might want to check this out and realize that their strings don't fit all short scale bass guitars. What a waste of time and money. I hope my review keeps you from making the same mistake I did. I hardly ever post a review but I thought ya'll had to know.

UPDATE: (2/20/10)... I emailed D'addario explaining the problem and they quickly responded with the following: (pasted verbatim)

(quote) "You can't always tell which strings you need just by the scale length of
your bass. Some basses are strung through the body, and the distances
from the bridge to where the ball-end locks in, and the distance from
the nut to the tuning pegs are not always exact. The best way to figure
out the scale length would be to perform the following test:

1) Mark the lowest pitched string (while on your bass) at the nut
with a marker.
2) Remove the string
3) Measure the distance from the inner edge of the ball end the
mark you just made.
4) Record this length and refer to the following chart.

Length String Set Scale
Up to 32' D'Addario Short
32" - 34" D'Addario Medium
34" - 36" D'Addario Long
36" - 38" D'Addario Super Long (unquote)
