Description

Players love the optical compressor in the highly acclaimed BBE B-Max bass preamp, so much so that BBE decided to offer the same compressor circuit in a stand-alone foot pedal. Opto Stomp soft-knee design offers transparent control of dynamics and very musical compression reminiscent of the classic designs of the best vintage optical-element compressors of the 50’s and 60’s. Other features include switchable -15dB pad, LED compression indicator, non-slip rubber bottom, easy-access 9v battery compartment and included external power supply.

5BBE Opto Stomp Great Value, Great Performer  Jul 16, 2010 By Vince
Keep in mind that not all compressors work exactly the same way. Some control volume more by boosting the signal then attenuating it, some add distinctive tonal characteristics. Some have a very noticable hard-knee in the compression curve.
Keeping all that in mind, if you know what this one does, AND YOUR WANT WHAT IT DOES, its a great little piece of equipment.

Although its a stomp-box, it functions more like a studio compressor. By that I mean, its best used strictly to regulate overall volume in a "transparrent" way. If you want to click it on to solo and get boost + ringing sustain + classic stomp-box compressed tone - buy a different one.

If you want to transparrently even out volume of inconsistent pick-ups, if you want to smooth out inconsistent pick attacks, if you want to use different playing techniques without worrying changing volume - its a great choice. Great at the end of your effects chain like a studio compressor, but also handy at the beginning of your chain to improve the performance of any effect that tracks pitch, or is otherwise sensitive to changes in input level.

Sometimes on sale for less than $70. Can't beat that, I feel its worth $99.

3I received the older model not as pictured.  Dec 27, 2010 By Louis E. Sanchez "radiolouis"
opto stomp is a good compressor if you don't need metering. Amazon sent me the wrong unit twice. They sent me the older unit that has a lasso and rope graphic on the pedal. You will not get what is pictured as they must not have any units left that have the -15db switch which is good for active basses. Buy with caution. Did I mention they sent me the wrong unit even a second time? Seems the pickers just pick forget about reading a refund reason. Oh and the older unit sells for 60 dollars right here on Amazon back in July.... Gonna buy a Markbass Compressore at The local music store.... :(

5Subtle pedal, nicely built, easy to operate  Jul 05, 2010 By Bassman Al "Bassman Al"
This little pedal is really nice if you are looking for a subtle way to help your sound. I play bass, and I use this pedal now all the time, although I may use it for select songs as I learn more about it. If you are looking for a radical makeover in your tone, this is not the pedal for you. If you are looking for the finishing touches to an already nice tone, this is worth looking at. The Amazon price is almost half what it costs on other sites, and if you have Amazon Prime, return shipping is free, so you have nothing to lose by trying it out!

5BBE is awesome.  Mar 14, 2010 By T. N. "Seattle"
Can you get a better compressor? I'm sure there's some $400 boutique pedal out there that is possibly better than this one. But for ***$60*** this is completely unbeatable. I'm a bassist and I have a number of other compressors (Aguilar, Markbass, EBS, MXR, Line 6 to name a few), all of which were at least twice as expensive as this one, yet this one sounds better, has better build quality, is quieter, and easier to use. I have a $3,000 Modulus bass, a $1,500 amp, so it is not a financial decision that I use this pedal--I would probably pay four times what they're asking for it here, but to get a compressor this good for this little money is a complete no-brainer, just click 'Add To Cart'!

5A limiter, not a sustainer  Nov 22, 2011 By Charlo
Buy this if you want to even out your volume in a subtle way. Endless sustain is not what this pedal is about. Five stars for what it is. Mine is the older one with the cut switch.
